Game: San Diego State Aztecs vs. Temple Owls
Date/Time: Sunday March 20th, 2011 / 10:10am AEST
March Madness continues this weekend as the San Diego State Aztecs battle with the Temple Owls. The Aztecs are the #2 seed out of the West region, while the Owls are the #7. This game will be played in Tucson, Arizona. San Diego State is coming off a win over Northern Colorado, while Temple came away with a last second win over state rival Penn State.
San Diego State Overview:
The Aztecs were the surprise team out of the Mountain West Conference. San Diego State finished with a 33-2 record, with both losses coming to conference champion, Brigham Young University. The Aztecs picked up non-conference wins over Gonzaga and California, and also beat the Running Rebels of UNLV twice.
Kai Leonard is the top scorer and rebounder for the Aztecs. Leonard scored 15.4 points per game and also ripped down 10.7 rebounds per game. San Diego State ranked 81st in the nation in scoring; as they averaged just over 72 points per game. This is the 7th NCAA tournament appearance for the Aztecs. Thursday was their first win in school history.
The Temple Owls made the tournament out of the Atlantic Ten conference. The Owls finished second, behind Xavier, and ahead of Richmond. Temple used a Juan Fernandez floater at the buzzer to beat the Nittany Lions. The win for Temple was their 32nd win in 60 NCAA tournament games. All but two of Temple’s losses on the season came to teams that are in the NCAA tournament.
Ramone Moore is the leading scorer for Temple. On the season, Moore scored 15.2 points per game. Temple as a team was not a great offensive team, as they scored 70.9 points per game. Fernandez is the point guard on the team, that finished 33rd in the country in assists; with over 15.3 per game. Temple lost to Richmond in the Atlantic Ten quarterfinals game.
San Diego State/Temple Pick:
The Aztecs are the favorite to win this game. Temple knows how to keep games close, and play to their style. Look for that to happen again on Saturday. This game is going to come down to the wire, with the Aztecs coming away with a win. The win will be a single possession, which means Temple will cover the spread.
