Melbourne Cup: Oceanographer rockets up Cup markets

Sun, Oct 30, 9:02am by Senior Writer

Oceanographer was the big mover in Melbourne Cup markets on Derby Day, with the Godolphin stayer racing himself into contention with an impressive win in the Lexus Stakes.

Oceanographer is now $7 second favourite for the $6 million handicap, having booked his place in the final field with a thrilling victory on Saturday and then coming up with barrier 11 at the barrier draw.

Long-time Cup favourite Hartnell still holds sway at $5 after coming up with barrier 12, which should give his jockey James McDonald few concerns.

Hartnell and Oceanographer are two of the five Godolphin runners in the race, with the world’s largest stable having its best-ever chance to win the Cup, having run second on three previous occasions.

Of Godolphin’s other runners, Beautiful Romance ($67) came up with barrier 1, the same as last year’s winner Prince of Penzance, Secret Number ($34) will jump from barrier 10 and Geelong Cup winner Qewy ($21) has barrier 15.

Qewy has been strongly backed since the barrier draw, coming from $34 into $21 with Sportsbet.

Godolphin chief executive John Ferguson said he felt there had never been a better year for Godolphin to break their Cup drought.

“We have been running well in the race and to win it this year would be very, very special,” he said at the barrier draw. “We’ve got a real chance this year and one of them might hit the back of the net.”

Caulfield Cup winner Jameka has almost been forgotten among the international onslaught in the event, but after coming up with barrier 3, she is steady at $8. She is the only locally-bred runner in the race.

Australian owner Lloyd Williams, looking for his fifth winner in the great race, has four runners with his main chance, Bondi Beach, trained by Aidan O’Brien, coming up barrier five and remains solid at $9. Sydney Cup winner Gallante (barrier 2, $67), Almandin (barrier 17, $17) and Assign (barrier 22, $67) make up Williams quartet.

Big Orange, who ran fifth in last year’s Cup, will push forward from barrier 7, and is $17.

Two of the world’s greatest jockeys, Frankie Dettori and Joao Moreira, will have their work cut out for them with Dettori’s mount Wicklow Brave ($21) jumping from barrier 24 and Moreira’s Ebor winner Heartbreak City drifting slightly from $14 out to $15 after coming up with barrier 23.

Japan’s Curren Mirotic is $26 and is also drawn wide in 18. While Exospheric, who was third in the Caulfield Cup, is at $20 and comes out of barrier 13.
