NSW pulls off Game 1 upset, becomes State of Origin favourite

NSW winNEW South Wales took an important step towards State of Origin redemption last night, upsetting Queensland in a Game 1 thriller.

The Blues beat the Maroons 12-8 in a bruising, dramatic affair at Suncorp Stadium and are now favourites to win their first State of Origin series since 2005.

NSW are now paying $1.45 at to win the series and $1.80 to win Game 2 in Sydney in three weeks.

Punters came for the Blues late in betting for game one last night, backing them from $2.85 into $2.70 at Sportingbet. One confident punter had $25,000 on the Blues to win at odds of $2.85.

Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said the punters had sniffed an upset.

“The late move for the Blues was relentless and in the final hour before kickoff they attracted almost 80% of the money that came in despite being the outsiders,” he said.

Queensland also has its injury worries following the match. Cooper Cronk will be on the injury list for an extended period after suffering a suspected broken arm.
