The Ballarat Turf Club and online bookmaker Sportsbet.com.au announced that their successful partnership will continue thanks to the signing of a new five-year deal. In addition to the bookmaker’s continued sponsorship of the Ballarat Cup—the final feature event of the Victorian Spring Racing Carnival held each November—the Ballarat Dowling Forest Racecourse has been renamed Sportsbet-Ballarat.
Sportsbet CEO Corman Barry greeted news of the deal with the following comments, “Sportsbet has enjoyed working closely with Lachlan McKenzie and the team at the Ballarat Turf Club. Ballarat is clearly a significant club within the Victorian racing industry landscape and this partnership is a commitment to that. Country racing is very important to the racing industry and this partnership, along with Kyneton & Hanging Rock, Echuca and Benalla racing clubs, recognizes the value we place in punters in these areas.”
Lachlan McKenzie, CEO of the Ballarat Turf Club, was equally enthusiastic in his official statement. “We are thrilled to announce this fantastic development in our partnership with Sportsbet. This lucrative arrangement secures major sponsorship of the Ballarat Turf Club for the next five years. The name ‘Sportsbet-Ballarat’ is respectful of the proud history of the Ballarat Turf Club in that we have retained our local identity with the inclusion of ‘Ballarat’ in the new name. Sportsbet have been wonderful supporters of the Club for the last five years, and this new contract will extend their commitment to racing in Ballarat to ten years. We thank Sportsbet for their support of the Ballarat Turf Club and local racing.”
The relationship between the two companies started in 2009, and the latest agreement will see it extended to at least 2018. In addition to offering sponsorship money to ensure that the annual Ballarat Cup is one of the most respected events in country racing, fans of the sport can expect to see a few unique twists on feature racedays. For example, 2012 saw the running of the Magic Millions, the first clockwise horse race to take place on a Victorian track in 65 years. In honour of the event, the $10,000 Sportsbet.com.au Reverse Race was also held for spectators who were brave enough to run around the track backwards in search of prize money.
The Ballarat Turf Club has one of the most respected racetracks in provincial Victoria, and their two grass tracks accommodate an average of 30 race meetings during a season. In addition to the annual Ballarat Cup event, their other feature events include Port Plant Autumn Cup Day, Gold Nugget Race Day, and Ladies Day.
Sportsbet.com.au has been in operation since 1993, and they were acquired by Paddy Power in 2010. The first licensed bookmaker in the nation of Australia, Sportsbet is recognized for their wide range of wagering options on racing and international sporting events. The company is also known for their special promotions and novelty wagers on events such as X Factor Australia and Dancing with the Stars.
