Tomic and Barty fly Aussie flag as favourites on Day 5

Ash Barty

With Andreas Seppi upsetting number 14 seed Nick Kyrgios on another eventful day at the Australian Open the baton was passed to his compatriot Bernard Tomic. The latter avoided succumbing to the same fate as Kyrgios, holding off a late rally from Victor Estrella Burgos to move through to the third round.

Kyrgios went up two sets to love before a trademark implosion that saw his Italian opponent came back to stun the Aussie in a five-set thriller. Elsewhere, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka all enjoyed wins.

As always, there are plenty of short-priced favourites before we reach the second week but Tomic isn’t one of them, he’s priced as a $1.79 favourite to beat Englishman, Dan Evans ($1.95).

It won’t be an easy task for the Queenslander as Evans’ is coming off a stunning four-set victory over number seven seed, Croatian, Marin Cilic.

WATCH: Our Preview of the 3rd Round

Andy Murray ($1.02) isn’t expected to have any trouble against American Sam Querrey ($11). The Scot dropped only five games against 19-year-old Russian, Andrey Rublev in the second round.

Roger Federer didn’t have it quite as easy in his match against young American Noah Rubin. The four-time champion battled through a tough third set in which he lost his rhythm but eventually got through unscathed 7-5 6-3 7-6.

The Fed Express is $1.51 in his match against number ten seed Tomas Berdych ($2.44). This could be a tough one for Federer as Berdych hasn’t spent too much time on court yet. Their career head-to-head is 16-6 in Federer’s favour including the past five matches in the Swiss’ favour.

In the women’s draw, Venus Williams meets Duan Yingying of China. Williams is a solid favourite at $1.36 to progress past the third round for just the second tiem in six years, while her opponent is at $2.97, having never made it this far at the Australian Open.

Defending champion Angelique Kerber is also heavily favoured ($1.14) to beat Kristyna Pliskova ($5.20) on Friday. The number one seed hasn’t been at her best so far though with both of her matches going to deciding third sets.

Australia’s Ash Barty is priced at $1.78 to beat German qualifier Mona Barthel ($1.95) after reaching the third round by beating Shelby Rogers in straight sets on Wednesday. Barty is fast becoming the story of the tournament, the all-round sportswoman who also played the in the Women’s professional Big Bash cricket competition last season.

Best Bet: Ash Barty to win: $1.78
