The impressive son of Redoute’s Choice is currently a $13 chance with BetEasy.com.au for the $500,000 sprint in which the Ken Keys-trained Rich Enuff holds favouritism.
His latest run was in the Stan Fox Stakes where he finished a luckless second behind Caulfield Guineas winner Shooting to Win, who in his own right would be the odds-on favourite to win this race.
Messara believes he has been running without luck for most of this campaign.
“The start before Scissor Kick was one of the unluckiest seconds you’ll see in a Group One where he was only run down late by Hallowed Crown in the Golden Rose,” said Messara.
“He has never closer than three deep, never had cover and should’ve won by three lengths.
“He’s proven himself against the best three-year-old’s in the land this whole season. I can see there’s a query on how he’s come through those two tough runs but he’s fine.
“The good thing is that he’s had plenty of time to freshen up whereas horses like Rich Enuff, and don’t get me wrong he looks an awesome horse, has to come back from the mile to this within three weeks,” he added.
Scissor Kick had a quiet trial at Flemington last Friday over 800 metres in which Messara was happy with the result.
“He handled it very well and clocked 46.5 seconds, which I was pleased with,” he said.
“This wasn’t his primary target but that jumpout showed me he was still ready to fire.
“I’ve had a bit of luck with straight track racing. Ortensia won two Group One’s up the straight, let’s hope this bloke can make it three.”
