WSOP Circuit returns to Sydney next week

Thu, Nov 17, 2:40pm by Staff Writer

Poker players all over Australia are eagerly anticipating the return of World Series of Poker (WSOP) calibre competition, which will return for the first time since 2014’s WSOP-Asia Pacific event.

The WSOP-Circuit, a subdivision of the WSOP proper which has toured America and select global stops since 2004, announced the addition of six events to its International schedule back in September. And first among the newly added stops is an 11-tournament series spanning 21 days which will be hosted by The Star Casino in Sydney.

Beginning on November 22 and running through to December 12, the WSOP-Circuit International Sydney series offers 11 chances to win the coveted gold ring awarded to all circuit winners. Buy-in amounts range from AUD$220 to AUD$5,000, with the series culminating in a AUD$2,000 Main Event.

Most of the events on the schedule will involve the classic poker variant of No-Limit Texas Hold’em (NLHE), but a few will showcase the increasingly popular four-card alternative known as Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO).

Of the recognised stars from the primary WSOP-Circuit, eight-time ring winner Ari Engel is the only high-profile name likely to make the journey, making The Star Sydney the scene for regional poker players to display their talent on the major tournament stage.

Australian poker legends like 2005 WSOP Main Event champion Joe Hachem, six-time WSOP bracelet winner and WSOP-Circuit champion Jeffrey Lisandro, and Sydney’s original card shark Gary Benson are likely attendees, giving legions of recreational players the chance to rub elbows with, and raid the stacks of, national poker heroes.

In a statement announcing the Sydney addition, WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart praised The Star as the new venue for major poker tournaments in the region:

“We are constantly looking for attractive opportunities to expand the WSOP portfolio and taking a WSOP International Circuit Event to the beautiful city of Sydney for the first time looms as one of our most exciting announcements of 2016.

“The Star’s poker facilities are world-class and delivers the perfect stage to see the some of the biggest players in the world in action.”

Damian Quayle, who serves as Chief Operating Officer of Gaming for The Star, spoke about the WSOP brand’s prestige within the poker industry:

“The WSOP name has been responsible for many of poker’s greatest moments so it’s fitting that The Star is hosting this fantastic event in our newly renovated Poker room for the first time.”

“The Star’s Poker facilities are world-class and delivers the perfect stage to see the some of the biggest players in the world in action. Set alongside the beautiful Sydney Harbour and under the famous WSOP banner, this tournament series promises to be something special.”

The Star is running special satellite tournaments around the clock, awarding entries to the Main Event and High Roller tournaments to winners of smaller events held daily in the poker room.
