Melpark Major made an impressive return to the track last night at the first official trials at Harnesss Racing Victoria’s new showcase venue,TABCorp Park in Melton.
Melpark Major has been away from racing since December 2008 when taking out the Group 1 Victoria Cup at Moonee Valley.
An injury incurred while preparing for the 2009 Inter Dominion Series earlier this year, resulted in the star missing the series, a series he was favoured to win at the time at both Sportsbet and Iasbet.
In terrible conditions at Melton last night, the horse looked fat and condition gave out near the line when he was just grabbed for second by Decorated Jasper.
But the run was very impressive as with regular driver Amy Tubbs in the gig, Melpark Major was allowed to sleep at the tail of the field before sent to work a half mile from home and going hard at it with early leader Maffioso.
That run saw Malpark Major run his last half mile in a startling 56.4 seconds, not bad for a horse still considered a long way from fully fit.
