The final acceptances for Saturday’s Group I Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) has been finalised along with the barrier draws. The heavy favourite Sepoy has drawn wonderfully in barrier 5 and has opened at $1.70 at Sportingbet fixed odds in a race many are predicting he’ll easily win.
The main threats have also drawn well in the fight for the best 2YO sprinting crown. Hallowell Belle has drawn barrier 4, Atomic (2) and Anevay (3). If the early Blue Diamond Stakes betting is any indication – this is going to be a one horse race.

Blue Diamond Stakes 2011 Best Bet
It takes a brave man to suggest that anything can beat Sepoy here. This 2YO chestnut Colt is unbeaten and in his last start did in in style by beating Running Tall by 3.5 lengths while barely raising a sweat. He’s already won just shy of 200k and will be looking to add plenty more to that kitty for Sheikh Mohammed.
My best bet for the 2011 Blue Diamond stakes is Hallowell Bell. In her last start she lost by 1.5 lengths and was terribly unlucky after being bumped and jammed 200m out. She could not get a clear run and I believe she would have won that race given a fair chance.
The 2YO chestnut Filly is by Starcraft and has won just 32k in her short two race career. She has drawn beautifully in barrier four and I think she’ll get the run she desperately deserves. Will that be enough to beat Sepoy? That is the question we all have to ask ourselves, but at $9.00 on Sportingbet I’m willing to take that risk.
The Lee Freedman trained and late entry runner Atomic looks to be the next best, along with the Tim Martin trained Anevay. Do they have a realistic chance of winning this race? I don’t think so, but they have also drawn favourably in the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes.
Atomic is a 2YO Colt by Commands and has only had one race to date in which he won. He collected just over 60k in prize money in that race in which he ran favourite and beat Vatican along with Hollyweird. Being so lightly raced and having a 100% winning record gives him some hope, but it’s hard to compare that with the stunning form of Sepoy. Nevertheless this brown Colt will get his chance on Saturday the 26th of February, 2011 with his barrier 2 draw.
The last horse that we’ll take a look at is Anevay. This classy 2YO Filly by Exceed and Excel has raced three times for one win and two 2nds. She lost to both Satin Shoes and One Last Dance who are both more than handy. She comes into this race as a $16.00 fixed odds shot on Sportingbet. She’s won over 90k in he 3 race career, and just like Atomic she will get her shot from the glorious barrier draw of 3.
I expect the odds for Hallowell Belle will shorten in a couple of points between now and race time. Sepoy is the deserved favourite of course, but $1.70 is too short for me.
