Today is an exceptional meet, especially for a mid-week event in horse racing. The 300k 2011 Mornington Cup betting is underway and will run later this afternoon. There are also two other feature races on today at Mornington, races six and seven. Not to mention the smaller races on the card which are also full of class.
Nepean Waste Inglis Premier 1200m
This is a tough race, with the two favourites on Sportingbet drawn out wide opening up the race even further. Delago’s Lad and Masthead will run the favourite, with the later currently edging for favouritism.
My best bet for this race is on No.1 – Delago’s Lad. From the two starts he has a first and second to his name. The 2nd place was to none other than the raging hot Blue Diamond favourite Sepoy. Before his first race Delago’s Lad raced in a trial and finished behind Masthead, something that I don’t give much weight, but you might. Drawing barrier 13 makes this 1200m race a bit tougher for Delago’s Lad. Masthead isn’t much better with a barrier draw of 11.
During the writing of this article Masthead has shortened from $4.60 to $4.20 while Delago’s Lad has remained steady at $4.80.
Best Bet: $4.80 fixed odds at Sportingbet on Delago’s Lad in the Nepean Waste Inglis Premier 1200m at Mornington today.
Mornington Nissan Hareeba Stks – Listed Race
My best bet for race 7 on the card is Launay, the 4YO Bay Gelding by Lonhro. He comes into this race after a 12 week spell and without a trial after scratching on the 31st January. This can be a concern for some, but I’m confident he’ll be fit enough today. Before going for his spell his won two 100k races in succession at Flemington in November.
An interesting point of note for Launay is the change of jockey. Mark Zahra is back riding him, the jockey that has won 2/2 with him at the same time last year. I think Peter Snowden and Mark Zahra can get the job down today, especially with the gorgeous barrier 4 helping them.
The only other horse in single figures in fixed odds markets is Captain Coltish. This 5YO is trained by Peter Moody and is coming off a 41 week rest. He may on the 2nd line of betting but this alone is enough to give me confidence in Launay and the first pick. Captain Coltish is paying $4.20.
Iasbet.Com Mornington Cup 2400m
This is the big one and if you read yesterday’s article I covered my two best tips for this race.
I won’t go over the details significantly again today, but overnight the money has come thick and fast for Cedarberg. I know of bets up to 18k have been placed on him, with many mid 4 figure bets as well.
He’s shortening in and don’t be surprised if come jump time, he’s close to the $2.50 mark. My best bet for this 2011 Mornington Cup is definitely Cedarberg, with my best value bet being Celtic Fanstasy @ $16.00.
