Catchy’s Diamond win doesn’t impress Golden Slipper bookies

Sun, Feb 26, 5:00pm by Senior Writer

Blue Diamond Stakes winner Catchy is only fourth favourite for next month’s $3.5 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill despite her impressive win in Saturday’s Caulfield feature.

Catchy, who started $4.40 favourite in the Diamond, charged home from back in the field to edge out Pariah in a thrilling finish, but is only rated an $11 shot to be able to beat the best juveniles north of the Murray on March 18.

Co-trainer Tom Dabernig is confident the filly will hold up to another run in the Slipper in three weeks’ time.

“She’s pulled up [well], she’s got an amazing appetite, like a lot of the Fastnet Rocks do,” Dabernig told RSN.

“She’s a really sound filly. She’s in great order. We will definitely be looking at the Golden Slipper now.”

“She’ll be doing plenty of work on the Sydney leg, and providing she’s right, we’re definitely looking at heading that way.

Dabernig said a decision on whether third-placed Formality ($26 in the Slipper) and fourth-placed Tulip (also $26) head to Sydney will be made in the coming days.

Pariah is also $11 for the Slipper having already won at Rosehill in January.

The current favourite for the Slipper is She Will Reign, who is unbeaten in three starts, the most recent being the Sliver Slipper last week.

She is currently $2.80, ahead of Magic Millions winner Houtzen, who is $8. Menari, who was beaten at his most recent start by Pariah, is $8.50.

Other moves from Saturday’s racing at Caulfield saw Oakleigh Plate winner Sheidel now $15 for the Newmarket Handicap in two weeks’ time. Extreme Choice, who ran third in the Oakleigh Plate, is now at $8 third favourite for the Newmarket behind Spieth, who is $4.40 and Flying Artie, who is $7.

Winx is $2.80 favourite for the Australian Cup after her 15th straight win in the Chipping Norton Stakes, but he won’t run in the Flemington feature. Humidor, who was narrowly beaten by stablemate Stratum Star in the Peter Young on Saturday is effectively a $4.40 favourite for the 2000m weight for age race on March 11.

Jameka, who ran fourth in the Peter Young, is $4.80, while The United States is $7.50 having ran third in that race. Stratum Star is $10.
