Feature racing heads to the Gold Coast this Saturday with the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) the highlight race in a day littered with black type racing.
Godolphin have been in the news over the past week with rumours of head trainer John O’Shea wanting out but on the racetrack their Group 1 Doncaster (1600m) winner It’s Somewhat ($3.50) returns after an all the way win in the ‘Randwick mile’ six weeks ago. He’s two from two this preparation and won the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) last campaign when third-up.
Sense of Occasion ($6.50) was third to It’s Somewhat in the Doncaster and he’s also third-up after a short let-up from his summer campaign. He’s put together consecutive third placings this time in with his most recent run being behind Winx and Hartnell in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) – and with those runs he’s netted connections $700,000.
McCreery ($5) was sixth in the Doncaster and fourth in the Group 1 All Aged (1400m) at his most recent run, and is one of two runners for Chris Waller – Preferment his other. Preferment ($9.50) is a multiple Group 1 winner who won the G1 BMW (2400m) of 2016 but has only been placed once since and is zero from six when first-up. Interestingly he did win a 1200m trial back in March and was third at his third trial this campaign finishing behind Sweet Redemption and Auvray who have both run well since.
Single Gaze ($6) was a Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) winner as a three-year-old and comes into this off a last start Listed win over 1600m at Doomben. Maurus ($13) is second-up and is one win and three placings from four starts when second-up. Articus ($15) is having his third Australian start and is first-up from the spring while Cylinder Beach ($8.50) has four wins from his last six runs, and is the best of the locals according to the betting.
A big field will assemble in an open Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) where it’s $6.50 the field. Attention ($6.50) is first-up for Team Snowden but has drawn wide in 14 with Jeff Lloyd to ride. NZ colt Heroic Valour ($6.50) is also fresh and will jump from 13 with Opie Bosson in the saddle.
Chris Waller has a strong hand in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) with Dawn Wall ($3.60) opening as favourite and Invincibella ($5) on the second line of betting. Dawn Wall was impressive two starts back in the G3 Keith Nolan Classic (1600m) and has since finished midfield in the G1 Vinery while her stable mate is third-up with two wins and seven placings from her 12 career starts. Candika ($4.60) is starting to build a handy record with five wins and four placings from her 15 starts with three of those wins coming from her last four runs. She’s drawn wide in barrier 17 but gets the services of big-time jockey Damian Browne. Savvan ($9.50) was third in the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) during the Caulfield carnival of the spring while The Pinnacle ($9) is yet to miss a place from her five career starts.
