The market for Saturday’s $3.5 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill has been opened right up with the top two favourites drawing outside barriers for Australia’s richest two-year-old race.
Super speedy Queensland filly Houtzen would have started shorter than $4 if she had drawn a decent alley, but instead came up with barrier 16, which will likely come into 14 when the emergencies are withdrawn ahead of the race.
Houtzen also drew 16 when she won the Magic Millions impressively in January and is now $4.20 with Sportsbet.
One-time favourite She Will Reign, who was surprisingly beaten last start, is now $5.50 after coming up with barrier 13.
Catchy has been the big shortener in recent weeks. She was $11 immediately after winning the Blue Diamond at Caulfield on February 25, but is now $7 after the final field was declared and she came up with barrier eight.
The leading colt in the race is Pariah, who was beaten by Catchy in the Blue Diamond, but has experience going the Sydney way. He is $8.50 after coming up with barrier four.
The David Hayes stable has Catchy plus three other runners in the race. Tulip, who ran fourth in the Diamond, and then came out and won the Magic Night last Saturday, is $11 after coming up with barrier 10.
Formality, a last start third behind Catchy in the Diamond, is $21, while speed machine Madeenaty, who will be ridden by Newmarket Handicap winning hoop Regan Bayliss, is $81, rounding out Hayes’ quartet.
The Golden Slipper will be competing for headline status with Winx going for win No.16 in succession in the $1 million George Ryder Stakes (1500m).
The champion mare won this race last year and is $1.15 to go back-to-back with her main rival, the grey sprinter Chautauqua, at $8, with multiple Group 1 winners Le Romain ($11) and Black Heart Bart ($15) also up for the challenge.
It’s the best field Winx has faced since she won the Cox Plate by eighth lengths last October.
As opposed to the George Ryder, The Galaxy will be a wide open sprint race, with Music Magnate and Russian Revolution both currently at $7 before acceptances on Wednesday.
The track is expected to be rain-affected with rain predicted everyday this week.
