Friday night marks the start of the two-day Moonee Valley Cox Plate carnival, with the main event the Group 1 Manikato Stakes for sprinters.
Sportsbet have reported massive money coming for the favourite Chautauqua to repeat his success of 12 months ago, despite the fact he drew an awkward inside barrier.
The bookmaker reported that Chautauqua, the winner of five Group 1 races in an illustrious career, has had eight times the amount of money than any other runner, with one punter already having $10,000 on the grey.
“Chautauqua was a beaten short-priced favourite in the Moir Stakes, but punters obviously think he can turn it around in the Manikato. He’s a star sprinter and out to 1200m should give him time to unleash the powerful finish he is capable of,’’ said sportsbet.com.au’s Christian Jantzen.
WATCH: Our Preview of Cox Plate Day
While Lucky Hussler has been solid at $9, the one at longer odds who has shortened has been Buffering, who was $12 earlier in the week and is now $10. Buffering is running in this race for an incredible fifth time.
We think Chautauqua should have the class on these, but not sure that the $2.50 is value. The inside barrier, and the possibility the track will suit front runners, does concern us.
He’s top pick just ahead of the old marvel Buffering, who looks ready to put his best foot forward from a good barrier. English is our third pick, while the value could be Holler.
We will tackle the Saturday meeting with an in=depth preview on Friday, but we have offered our selections for each of the eight races on Friday.
Our best of the night is Race 5 No.2 C’est Beau La Vie, who is around $4.50.
