Tosen Stardom $34 into $13 for Cox Plate on Dato run

Mon, Sep 5, 11:27am by Senior Writer

Former Japanese galloper Tosen Stardom is now clear second favourite for next month’s $3 million Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley after a strong return to the track when fourth in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes.

Now trained by Darren Weir, Tosen Stardom sat back in the field and charged home for fourth to show he has brought his best Japanese form to Australia this campaign.

Sportsbet shortened Tosen Stardom into $13 for the Cox Plate on October 22 from a price of $34 early last week, while ruling favourite and defending champion Winx, who missed a run because of the heavy track at Randwick, has eased from $2.25 out to $2.50.

Hartnell was also $34 last week but after winning the Chelmsford Stakes in impressive fashion, is now third pick at $15, while The United States, who was sixth in the Dato Tan Chin Nam, came into $15 from $17 last week.

Awesome Rock, who won the Dato at big odds to book his spot on the Cox Plate, is now a $41 chance, which looks attractive considering he is guaranteed a start, while third-placed Set Square is $67.

Despite Black Heart Bart not racing this weekend, the money has still come for the other Weir contender in the Cox Plate, who is also now $17.

Hartnell also shortened for the $3 million Caulfield Cup on October 15 off the back of his win in the Chelmsford. He was $34 with Sportsbet last week, but is now $15 third favourite, with Highland Reel and Tarzino at the top of the markets at $13. Tosen Stardom also shortened into $21 in an open Caulfield Cup market but is highly unlikely to run. There are 26 horses $26 or shorter with Sportsbet.

The Melbourne Cup market is even more open, with Signoff now the equal $17 favourite after owner Lloyd Williams indicated Order of St George, who is also $17, is unlikely to come to Australia.

2014 Cup hero Protectionist is on the next line of the market at $21, along with Tarzino, Tavago, Idaho, Curren Miriotic, Big Orange, Scottish and Hartnell. There are 21 horses priced between $17 and $26.

Many of the best local hopes in the major spring features will run at Flemington on Saturday, where the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) will be run.
