Racing continues at the same venues this weekend with the Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield and the Shannon Stakes at Rosehill. Boom horse Smart Missile ventures down to Melbourne for the Spring, but to win the Rupert Clarke Glen Boss (unlikely to ride – injured at trackwork this morning) will have to deal with the absolute outside barrier. The horse he has been battling with, Helmet, also hits Melbourne and he heads the market in a pretty skinny Guineas Prelude. At Rosehill Manawanui is heading for five straight in the Group Two Stan Fox Stakes while Secret Admirer looks hard to beat in the main race of the day, the Shannon Stakes.
Rosehill Race 2 – Stan Fox Stakes Tips, Betting & Preview
The first of four Group races at Rosehill is Race 2, the Stan Fox Stakes and it is the easiest race of the day. Only a small field of five are running and while that often spells trouble for the short priced favourite, in this case Manawanui will run around and just win. He is coming off a Group One win over Smart Missile and at the set weights can get to the front, dictate the pace and handle these easily.
Best chance for the quinella is the Brisbane visitor State Of Wealth. Has been impressive winning his last two, but this is a steep rise in class to take on Manawanui. If punters are looking for another option for multiples then the rank outsider Roma Giaconda is the value. She ran reasonable time in winning her second start at Albury and she might have more upside than the others apart from the favourite.
Betting: Manawanui $1.16, State Of Wealth $7.50, Cocky Raider $12.00, Irish Times $15.00, Roma Giaconda $81.00.
Rosehill Race 6 – Shannon Stakes Tips, Betting & Preview
The main race of the day is the Group Two Shannon Stakes (Race 6) run over 1500 metres where our traders think that while Secret Admirer is the horse to beat, Fast Clip will get the tempo it needs to beat her. He will get a soft lead in front and it might be hard for Secret Admirer and Torio’s Quest to run him down.
Secret Admirer might find herself back on the fence mid-field and that is not ideal, however, given a clear run at Fast Clip she could easily motor home at express speed. The only other chance in the race is Torio’s Quest who comes out of the same race as Fast Clip, the Theo Marks and the rise in distance will suit him.
One horse to watch for the big staying races later in the spring is Older Than Time. The traders are expecting a good first up run and she could be a big shortener in the Melbourne Cup market if she runs as expected.
Betting: Secret Admirer $2.25, Fast Clip $4.60, Torio’s Quest $4.60, Lone Command $13.00, Descarado $16.00, Offenders $16.00, Others $19.00 & above.
Rosehill Race 7 – Colin Stephen Handicap Tips, Betting & Preview
Race 7 is the Colin Stephen Handicap; a Group three race over 2400 metres which is the key lead-up race to the Metropolitan Handicap next week. Lamasery is the form horse, but he does rise 4kg after winning the Kingstown Town Classic and he is untried past 2000 metres so the traders think he is somewhat of a risk. They are tipping Praecido despite the fact he has won only once in his 22 starts. Since being gelded this preparation he has looked terrific in two starts back and the jump now to 2400 is perfect. He also meets Lamasery 3.5kg better at the weights.
Ironstein has had no luck of late and like Praceido the extra distance is right up his alley. Adroitly is lightly raced but talented and is a definite threat to be charging over the top of them late in the race.
Betting: Lamasery $2.70, Ironstein $5.50, Adroitly $5.50, Praecido $8.00, Galizani $12.00, Red Eye Special $13.00, Hume $15.00, Raeburn $15.00, Others $26.00 & above.
Roseill Race 8 – Golden Pendant Tips, Betting & Preview
The final race of the day (Race8) is the Group Three Golden Pendant over 1200 metres and as the betting suggests it is a very open affair. The traders are going for some value here in Graceful Anna. While she didn’t show much resuming in the Sheraco Stakes, she does have a terrific second up record, will get the run of the race and she is much better suited at the set weights scale here.
Hardest to beat is another with some value for punters, Flying Success. Like Graceful Anna she will run much better second up and she does seem to do her best work at Rosehill. Ofcourseican caught the eye when just missing in the Sheraco and with the in-form Hugh Bowman taking the ride; he cannot be left out of calculations. Shannara is a horse on the up and she will run well fresh, while Gybe is considered a risk. She rises 3kg form her win last start, has a tricky barrier and has lost the services of Glen Boss in the saddle.
Betting: Ofcourseican $5.50, Phenomenal Lass $6.00, Gybe $8.00, Flying Success $9.00, Graceful Anna $9.00, Shannara $9.00, Kanzan $10.00, Others $11.00 & above
Saturday’s meeting at Caulfield is the extra day that the Melbourne Racing Club has on their calendar this year and while the Rupert Clarke Stakes is a big event, the day only has two Group races on the card. The first of those is the Group Three Caulfield Guineas Prelude for the colts on their way to the big race in two weeks’ time.
Caufield Race 5 – Guineas Prelude Tips, Betting & Preview
The traders have Golden Archer as the horse to beat. He led all the way to win the McNeill Stakes and if he handles the jump to 1400 metres, then he can repeat that performance. Hardest to beat is Helmet. He is the most talented yet he is wayward. If he jumps away he can get a smooth run from barrier six and can win, despite getting up in the weight.
The other genuine chances in the race are Chase The Rainbow and That’s The One. Chase The Rainbow absolutely jumped out of the ground running second at Flemington last start, while That’s The One has had a setback, but is unbeaten in his two starts.
Betting: Helmet $3.20, Golden Archer $3.50, Chase The Rainbow $6.00, That’s The One $9.00, Cross Of Gold $12.00, Specter $13.00, Secret Hills $15.00, Others $26.00 & above.
Caufield Race 6 – Guineas Prelude Tips, Betting & Preview
The main race of the day is the Group One Rupert Clarke Stakes (Race 6) run over 1400 metres. Smart Missile has been all the rage in early markets for the Guineas, but in this race he has drawn out in the car-park in barrier 17. He is all class and the best horse in the race, but the traders think that too much has to go right for jockey Glen Boss to pull it off.
Woorim appeals as a better option. He ran third in this race last year and looks a better horse this time around. There will be enough speed on up front to allow him to unleash his powerful finishing burst, although that may just help Smart Missile as well. Pinwheel never runs a bad race and he is drawn to get a nice run just off the speed.
Blackie and Dreamaway are four year olds on the way up and they both have ability. Blackie’s first up run behind Woorim was a ‘belter’ while Dreamaway dominated as a three year old in Perth winning both the Derby and the Oaks. Willy Pike has come across to ride so that is a strong pointer in itself. Testascana has winning form but from a bad barrier, back in distance and up in class he is considered a risk.
Betting: Smart Missile $3.50, Woorim $4.50, Pinwheel $8.50, Blackie $12.00, Dreamaway $13.00, Luen Yat Forever $15.00 Testascana $17.00 Others $17.00 & above.
Caufield Race 7 – Guineas Prelude Tips, Betting & Preview
Race 7 on the card is the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes run over 1200 metres. It is a tricky race where our traders suggest punters take care. The top nomination is Chosen To Fly. The grey horse has thrived since transferring to the Alderson stable with two terrific runs. His last start third behind Atomic Force reads well for this. If last starts are important then Speediness goes into calculations. He was runner–up to Sincero at Scone and that form is even more impressive.
Shrapnel needed the first up run, so punters should forgive his run in the McNeill. He excels second up, three from three. It’s been a long time since Phelan Ready was ready to salute and he prefers the sting out of the ground, but his run at Flemington behind Lone Rock was an excellent first up run and one of his two wins has been second up.
Betting: First Command $5.50, Shrapnel $5.50, Chosen To Fly $6.00, Irish Dream $6.50, Speediness $7.00, Phelan Ready $9.00, Adnocon $15.00, Others $17.00 & above.
