The UFC returns for its first big event of 2017 and what a way to bring in the new year, with two of the best female strikers doing battle this Sunday (AEDT). Former boxing champion Holly Holm faces Muay Thai legend Germaine de Randamie in Brooklyn, New York.
The winner is set to be crowned the first-ever women’s featherweight champion.
Holm, who famously defeated Ronda Rousey in Melbourne in November 2015, is a $2 underdog to defeat de Randamie ($1.80) and a win would see her become only the fourth UFC fighter to hold titles in two weight divisions.
It won’t be easy though, De Randamie heads into the bout having won four of her past five fights. She has a deep kickboxing background who is a striker at heart and does a wonderful job of defending.
Holm enters this fight with a 10-2 record but has lost her last two fights, the most recent of which was against Valentina Shevchenko in July. She isn’t the same confident knockout machine that she was a couple of years ago and her win over Ronda Rousey seems like a long time ago now.
The huge fight card will also feature a middleweight showdown between Anderson Silva and Derek Brunson, as well as top-ranked 185-pound contender Ronaldo Souza, who’s back in action opposite Tim Boetsch.
Anderson Silva was last seen in the Octagon at UFC 200 where he fell in a unanimous points decision to Daniel Cormier. The Brazilian is 41 years-old and hasn’t won a fight since 2012 but is still one of the greatest of all time. The former long-time middleweight champion is at $2.14 for this one.
Brunson is one of the top fighters in the middleweight division and is a $1.71 favourite. He’s coming off a first-round TKO loss to Robert Whittaker in Melbourne in November, but won five straight — four via first-round knockout — before that. He’s nine years younger than Silva and should have the edge.
Ronaldo Souza is a short-priced favourite ($1.19) to defeat Tim Boetsch ($4.75) and it’s little wonder, considering he’s won nine out of his last ten fights. You won’t get much value here but Souza will win.
