Renault driver Fernando Alonso claims he is on track to put in another solid back end of the season. Even though the Spaniard has been struggling for most of the season he thinks he can turn around his poor performances and finish strongly.
The former world F1 champion has picked up points in the last rounds. Perhaps this is a sign that the team is finally starting to show promise and are capable of the results that the once had so easily.
Alonso sits 40 points behind championship leader Jenson Button which gives him no hope of winning the title this year. That doesn’t stop him from talking it up and has dented his confidence one bit.
This is what he had to say in a recent interview: “It’s clear we need to take another step forward.”
“We will have new developments for the car over the next few weeks and that should help, but I’m not expecting to jump to the front of the grid in Turkey this weekend.”
“However, I still believe later in the year we can be back fighting for podiums and winning races, just as we did last year.”
“We know it won’t be easy, but the team is extremely motivated and determined to get back to the front.”
Whether or not Alonso’s form picks up remains to be seen. One thing we do know is that he won’t be catching championship leader Jenson Button.
