The Bathurst 1000 is undoubtedly Australia’s favourite motorsport race and come Sunday at 11am, the eyes of the nation will be on Mount Panorama for a tradition that’s been running since 1960 and is simply known as the ‘great race’.
Since 2006, the race winner has been presented with the Peter Brock trophy. Named after the legend who won the 1,000 kilometre race a record nine times after he tragically past away in an accident in the Targa West rally in Western Australia a decade ago.
The first leg of the Enduro Cup at Sandown Raceway was packed full of drama and there is no doubt that there will be plenty of drama as the best drivers in the country chase glory at Mount Panorama.
The betting market is a typically open affair and this year’s race is no different. Craig Lowndes and Steven Richards are currently equal favourites with Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell at $4.50.
It’s good news for Holden fans as they also occupy the third spot on the betting market with Shane Van Gisbergen and Alexandre Premat at $5. Van Gisbergen currently leads the Supercars points tally but has never won at the iconic track.
The best Ford chance comes on the fourth line of betting at $9.50 with Chaz Mostert and Steve Owen. Mostert will be hoping to replicate his 2014 win, when he held off Jamie Whincup in a chaotic race that was forced to stop for an hour so repairs could be made to a section of the track.
It is easy to see why the duo of Lowndes and Richards are favourites and there is no doubt that they are the car to beat. No driver has had more success at Mount Panorama in recent years than Lowndes and the pair were absolutely outstanding 12 months ago. They were not at their best at Sandown, but this is the race they have aimed at and there is genuine value at their current quote.
The Bathurst 1000 is always the highlight of the V8 Supercars season and that will the case again in 2016. I’m backing Lowndes and Richards to win, Lowndes recent record is phenomenal, winning five times in the last nine years.
BEST BET: Lowndes/ Richards to win. $4.50
