The ‘Day of the Dead’ is a festival celebrated throughout Mexico. The festival sees family and friends come together to pray for and remember loved ones who have died and to aid their spiritual journey. At the inception of the festival in the 17th century, it would take place in the summer but over time it came to be associated with Halloween with the three-day festival now starting on October 31st. This IGT designed pokie takes a fun, entertaining look at the festival, all designed in a cartoon style.
With both more ways to win than ever, and the opportunity to win an incredible number of free spins, there’s a lot to enjoy with the Day of the Dead. Here are the colourful highlights:
Day of the Dead features the Multiway Xtra format. Therefore, instead of the usual win-lines, you’ll be paid out when lining up three or more symbols on consecutive reels, irrespective of the position on those reels. The ‘Xtra’ part of the format refers to the fact that the pokie pays from both left to right and from right to left.
In all, this Multiway Xtra format gives players 720 ways to win on each spin, although paying both ways effectively doubles this number.
A scatter symbol which shows an image of a character with a rosette for eyes offers instant wins. Land 3 scatter symbols anywhere on the reels and you’ll win 2x your total bet, while 4 scatters increase this number to 10x. Land the scatter symbol on all five reels and the pay-out rises to 50 times your total bet.
Look out for the bonus symbol which shows a dancing female skeleton. To enter the free spins feature you’ll need to land this symbol on each of the five reels. Land one bonus symbol on each reel and 8 free spins will be yours. However, if you land more than one scatter symbol on a reel, you’ll win 8 free spins for every combination. The initial trigger can therefore lead to an incredible 96 free spins. This feature can be retriggered too, with a maximum of 240 free spins to be won in total!
Despite the fact you’ve got 720 ways to win, the total cost of each spin is just 50 credits. The ‘Day of the Dead’ title symbol is the highest paying, worth 1,000 coins for the maximum five in a row. A band of male skeletons decked out in purple pay 400 coins, while male and female dancing skeletons pay 300 coins. Other symbols, all based on the festival include pies, goblets, fruit and flowers.
The symbol showing three colourful coffins acts as the wild symbol. This appears on reels 2, 3 and 4 only and will substitute for any other symbol apart from the bonus and the scatter.
While the name of the festival might not seem too much fun, the festival itself is the opposite, with the fun aspect reflected on the reels. The game is full of colour everywhere, while the Mexican Calavera (a decorative representation of a human skull) plays a major role.
Check out the graphics when the Mexican skeleton band light up the screen – this can’t help but place a smile on your face. No Mexican festival would be complete without the lively music, and this pokie definitely delivers.
Day of the Dead is an entertaining, high octane pokie from IGT. With the Multiway Xtra format, wins are never going to be far away, while it will be a nice surprise the first time you land that right to left win. Land those scatter symbols for some nice instant boosts too – with 50x your total bet to be won. The highlight is certainly the free spins feature, where the number of spins can quickly mount up – land the maximum 96 and you’ll feel like starting your own festival.
