Mob Era Rocket Drama with Tumbling Wins
This pokie has more of a superhero / comic-book theme than a design involving space exploration. The era and characters on the reels of this beautifully produced game have a 1920’s or 1930’s mob feel to them. You spin the reels far above a city, with clouds visible below you above the sky scrapers. A mean looking (cigar smoking) villain shares the reels with the Rocket-powered superhero and ladies in period costumes.
Rocket Man is a simple pokie, replying on the solid production and design that IGT are known for to make it enjoyable. You’ll find tumbling wins and a free spins bonus game to enjoy, and spin over a full 99 win-lines.
Highlights of Rocket Man
You’ll find a 5×3 grid for the reels, in common with thousands of other pokies. What is unusual about this one is the number of win-lines. 99 lines cross from the left. You will spin for 99 coins, starting at just 1c. This is not the only slot in the IGT range to use the unusual 99 win-lines setup. You can also enjoy this on the (completely different themed) Pixies of the Forest.
Tumbling wins give you the opportunity to get more than one line hit per spin. Every time you get a winning combination it will explode on the reels. You’ll get paid for it, and more symbols will drop into the gaps left (with brand new ones appearing at the top of the reels).
Sometimes, those new symbols will create extra wins – which again explode. This creates a sequence where the reels literally ‘tumble’ over and over again, giving you multiple wins for the price of a single spin.
Bonus symbols can drop into place as the regular symbols explode. This gives you a second shot at triggering the free spins bonus as well as simply lining up 3+ of the special ‘atom’ style bonus symbols.
Things get even more dramatic during the free spins, with the background to the reels turning a toxic / atomic green colour. The symbols do change, though the characters on them and prizes awarded are the same.
As usual the music becomes a lot more intensive too! You can retrigger for more spins with 3+ of the bonus symbols which show a strange container with an atom design inside.
One symbol has a disproportionately big top prize. As the name of the pokie might suggest – this is the rocket man himself. Line up 5 of these and 5,000 coins are coming your way. Next comes an evil looking guy. He looks like a grey Freddy Kruger smoking a cigar. 5 of these will get you 1000 coins. Two ladies come next, with gold bars and jewels making up the smaller wins.
Wilds look like a badge on an old car. These only appear on the middle 3 reels, helping to connect the regular symbols – though not substituting for the free spins bonus symbols.
With the era set before the golden age of rockets, this pokie is a bit of a contradiction. The whole thing is set on what could be the grille of a car. The rocket in this case appears to be some kind of personal flying suit worn by the hero.
The background to the reels shows a spectacular via from above a city. Explosions for your wins, sound effects and animations for the symbols add to the intensity. Each of the symbol is detailed, and the overall effect is excellent.
When you get to the free spins the up-tempo music and toxic green background gives a big contrast to the main game. My one complaint with the animations is that the exploding symbols / tumbling wins is slow compared to other games. You can speed this up with by clicking the spin button again.
It is the quality of the animations and setting of the game which makes Rocket Man stand out. Considering that tumbling reels are used, some of the line wins are potentially very big. You’ll play on the unusual number of 99 win-lines. The only change from the regular spins is a toxic-looking free spins bonus. This gives you many opportunities to line up the Rocket Man – and defeat the Freddy Kruger style villain!
