The Creature from the Black Lagoon was a 1954 black and white movie which made quite an impact on release. Filmed in 3D, the movie centred around an amphibious human creature which lives in the deep, terrorising a geology expedition. This NetEnt designed pokie is based around the movie and centres around four characters – Kay, David, Carl and Lucas.
The action is fast and frenetic throughout, with wilds playing a major role. Look out for a fright during the main bonus feature. You’ll need to fight the monster to keep spinning. Here’s a look at the standout moments of this unique high variance slot:
During the base game you’ll find a sticky wild symbol in play. This wild, which shows the logo of the pokie, will substitute for any other symbol in the game apart from the bonus scatter.
When you hit this wild, it will remain in place for the subsequent spin. This can lead to some profitable spots – especially when there is more than one wild symbol on the reels.
The one symbol you’ll want to look out for is the ‘Free Spin!’ symbol. Land 3, 4 or 5 and you’ll activate the main feature and be awarded 10, 15 or 20 free spins respectively.
On activation you’ll enjoy a brilliant animated sequence where the creature from the black lagoon comes out of the depths and kidnaps Kay, taking her to the bottom of the lagoon. Then the action starts with the backdrop now the murky green at the bottom of the lake, as opposed to the calm summer’s atmosphere found in the rest of the game.
You’ll find a meter in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen showing the creature in the centre. Occasionally you’ll see a target appear on reel five, which will lead to the creature appearing behind it and being shot by a harpoon. Each shot inflicted will see one coloured segment disappear from the meter.
At two points around the meter you’ll see ‘unlock’ symbols – reach the first one and all wilds will spread one symbol to the left, leading to bigger wins. On reaching the second ‘unlock’ symbol, all wilds will now spread to both the left and the right, ensuring big winning opportunities. Both of these spreading wilds remain sticky as in the base game, meaning double the opportunity of landing those huge wins.
If you manage to complete the whole meter, you’ll win an additional ten free spins. These will be particularly high paying, as the wilds will spread to both the left and the right on every spin.
This NetEnt designed pokie features five reels and a set number of 20 win-lines that pay from left to right. The highest paying symbols are the four human characters. Kay has a top prize of 750 coins, while David, Carl and Lucas pay 600, 500 and 400 coins respectively. The four characters are joined by binoculars, scuba diving apparatus, an old-fashioned camera and a sharp knife on the reels.
The base game there is relative calm, as the pokie plays out on the lake on a summer’s day, with peaceful music being played alongside. The only indication of any horror is when you land a win with any of the human characters, who suddenly seem to be in shock.
It’s on entering the feature where the visuals are at their best, with those regular sightings of the creature and the brilliant introductory animation. It’s nice to see a pokie take on a whole new look for a feature, giving the free spins an extra focus.
NetEnt has to be commended for coming up with an original and exciting pokie in Creature from the Black Lagoon. Based on the 1950’s movie, this slot has that retro feel, while being able to move from relative calm to horror in the blink of an eye – just like any good horror movie. With those sticky wilds in play you’re always looking good for a win, while the features move things on dramatically. Keep firing those harpoons and the wins will be huge.
