Kookaburras Beat Netherlands

Fri, Jun 5, 11:04pm by Kevin Pitstock

A young and inexperienced Australian men’s hockey squad have downed the highly talented Dutch team. The Kookaburras won 3-2 to instill confidence in their ability.

Coach Ric Charlesworth was delighted with the win. He was especially pleased because the squad had no less than eight players with fewer than 20 games experience.

“With a hard working midfield unit working well we deserved to win by more than the one goal,” he said.

“We entered the Dutch defensive circle 25 times during the match to just 12 penetrations by the Netherlands forwards.”

The Kookaburras have to play again on Saturday when they meet England. They will be facing them in round 2 of the Hamburg Masters. If today’s performance was anything to go by, they are in with an excellent chance of progressing to the 3rd round.
