This game has now become a regular round 1 clash at Suncorp Stadium between the 2 oldest QLD teams. The Broncos have been a solid team since their inception, and last year, for the first time in 18 seasons they didn’t make the finals. The Cowboys have been spiraling downwards ever since they lost their one and only grand final appearance against the Tigers in 2005, Last year they dodged the wooden spoon only due to the Melbourne Storm’s Salary cap scandal. Brisbane have won the last 7 games in a row against the cowboys, however this isn’t to say they have been blowouts, with the Broncos Narrowly escaping with victory this time last year with a 24-0 lead going to 24 a piece, then scoring the winning try in the last few minutes.
Yet to name lineup.
Broncos demand pride in their team like no other in the competition, and this shows with 18 straight final’s appearances. Last year however they fell off the rails after State Of Origin, which is when they have traditionally put the pedal to the metal. Last year they also had a lot of players still in development like young hooker Andrew McCullough, Winger Yow-Yeh and Rookie of the year Matt Gillet. Broncos are without Hodges and Hennant, the two players that provide the most arsenal in the backs and forwards respectively. Without these two included we have a game on our hands, makes me wonder if QRL had a hand in this!?
The cowboys have set up camp at the bottom of the table for the last couple of seasons, and are looking to build a house there. 2009 coach of the year Neil Henry had a negative impact on the success of the club in 2010 with them losing more games than the previous season. Some of their losses were just terrible. There was very little recruiting over the off season and the crystal ball is painting a dire image for the season.
Without Hodges and Hennant the game will be closer than it should be, but I can’t see the cowboys traveling down here to secure the win. I think the Broncos are a shoe in and they are the tip for my Last Man Standing comp this week.
Broncos have won the last 7 games against their QLD counterparts, the last 4 in a row have been by 1-12. Look at this game to continue the trend.
