NRL Round 9 2010 – Tips, Predictions, Odds & Best Bets

Thu, May 6, 1:28am by Kevin Pitstock

After scoring 6/8 a fortnight ago, I didn’t do too well last week. My upsets didn’t pay off and I only scored 2/8. This week I’ve gone above and beyond in my research to provide you guys with some solid tips.

Rugby League Games Friday, 7th May

Australia VS New Zealand

Australia will be looking for revenge after they lost the World Cup to New Zealand. This game is a sellout at Melbourne’s new rectangular stadium. Australia should get up this one, with the betting having them as almost unbackable favourites.

Australia VS New Zealand Betting

Maybe I’m biased, but I don’t give New Zealand a chance in this one. TAB Sportsbet have Australia paying a lowly $1.15 and New Zealand $5.50 in head to head betting.

Australia VS New Zealand Best Bet

Hard to pick this one with Australia at such short odds. I’m going to have to go with the last scoring play an Australian try. The Aussies usually come home strong with plenty in the tank. You can get great value at $4.75 on this best bet.
City VS Country

These games can usually go either way, and I won’t be advising anyone to bet on this game. My prediction for the game is for Country to win, as they have more experience and I thik they should sneak home. That being said, the City vs Country game that is played each year has always been hard to pick.
I’m going to give a tentative lean towards Country winning this one, but won’t be betting.

City VS Country Betting

Sportsbet is our online sportsbook of choice for Aussies. At the time of writing Country is $1.52 and City is $2.55. Even though I think Country will win, these games are hard to tip. $2.55 for city looks like pretty good value for such an unpredictable game.

City VS Country Best Bet

The best bet in the City VS Country game is the +12.5 point start for City. You can get $1.43 with this massive point head start. The betting has Country at heavy favourites, which favours this bet.

NRL Games Saturday 8th May, 2010

Manly Sea Eagles VS St George Illawarra Dragons

This will be the highest quality game of NRL round 9 action. Manly will be suffering from having 8 players with representative duty the night before. The Dragons have their own issues as well with 5 of their players backing up.

Manly have the advantage of the home ground, but the Dragons have performed well their in recent times. This will be a hotly contested battle, which will rely heavily on how well the players back up.

The Dragons have won 10 of the 14 clashes between the two teams and hold a 4-3 lead at Brookvale oval. Based on form in the early part of the season, I’m going to have to go with my Dragons to grind away another victory.

Manly Sea Eagles VS St George Illawarra Betting

Head to Head

Sportsbet have the Dragons paying $1.57 as the visiting team. The Sea Eagles, who are at home are paying $2.40. Like I alluded to above, this will be a hotly contested game. I do think the Dragons will be too strong, so my best prediction for the game is a Dragons victory.

Sea Eagles VS Dragons Best Tip

My best tip of this clash has to be on Brett Morris to be the first try scorer (again). Punters have been laughing all the way to the bank the last two weeks. He’ll be looking to achieve a hat-trick of first tries this week and help the Dragons triumph over the Sea Eagles.

NRL Games on Sunday 9th May, 2010

Newcastle Knights VS Gold Coast Titans

The first of the Mother’s Day clashes is the toughest game to pick of the round. The Knights came from behind to beat the Broncos in Brisbane last week, after being embarrassed the week before by the Sharks.

The Titans were impressive last week by knocking off the Panthers who were on a 4 game hot streak. The week before they somehow managed to come from behind and beat Manly.

It remains to be seen if either of these teams are the real deal. The Titans have showed some steely determination in the past two weeks, but I still have my doubts.
The Knights play their best games at home, and their poor performances tend to be away from home. Their form is still too erratic though, and it’s tough to predict which team will show up.

With Scott Prince out to prove a point after missing Kangaroos selection, my prediction is that the Titans will travel well and pick this one up. My concern is that they have played 3 big games in a row, against the Dragons, Sea Eagles and Panthers. Travelling away again, on a rep week could prove a difficult task. Still, I can’t take the Knights seriously yet.

This is the most unpredictable game of round 9 in the NRL.

Newcastle VS Gold Coast Betting

Knights VS Titans Head to Head Betting

TAB Sportsbet have the Knights paying $1.85, with the Titans slight underdogs at $1.97. The betting market seems to be close, which goes hand in hand with my prediction. The best tip I can go with is to follow the form and take the Titans.

Best Betting Tip

I’m going to have to take the Titans head to head at $1.97 on this one. Those odds are pretty solid for a team sitting in second spot on the NRL ladder.
Melbourne Storm VS Brisbane Broncos

I was proved wrong last week when I predicted the Storm would fall to pieces playing away to the Cowboys. This week will prove to be another stern test, as they have several of their stars playing rep footy. Players backing up include Smith, Slater, Inglis and Cronk. They will be playing at home, which will come as a bonus because those players won’t have to travel.

The Broncos have been nothing short of terrible so far this season. They simply don’t have the quality to beat the Storm. This is their best chance yet to get one over them, but I predict their losing streak in Melbourne since 2002 will continue.

Melbourne Storm VS Brisbane Broncos Team Lineups

Melbourne Storm Team Lineup

1. Billy Slater
2. Matthew Duffie
3. Dane Nielsen

18. Gerard Beale(1 to be omitted)

Melbourne Storm VS Brisbane Broncos Betting

Storm VS Broncos Head to Head

As predicted, the Storm are short priced favourites for this clash. At $1.20 it is hardly worth getting on them unless you put them in a multi. If you think the Broncos can take advantage of the troubles the Storm are having then Sportsbet are offering an attractive $4.75.

Melbourne VS Brisbane Best Bet

Take the Storm at 13+ paying $1.85. If their rep players can get throgh Friday night alright, look for a similar result as their previous two games.

NRL Games Monday May 10th, 2010

Sydney Roosters VS North Queensland Cowboys

The Roosters will enjoy this game. After their last gasp win last week they return to their home ground brimming with confidence. The Cowboys were taken apart last week by the Storm and will be traveling without injured playmaker Jonathan Thurston.

In all reality, the Roosters should breeze through this game. My prediction is that the Cowboys will provide little resistance. Out of the 24 games played between the two sides, the Roosters have won an astonishing 19. That record is one of the biggest dominations in the modern era of Rugby League.

Sydney Roosters VS North Queensland Cowboys Team Lists

Sydney Roosters Lineup

1. Anthony Minichiello
2. Phil Graham

Roosters VS Cowboys Betting

Sydney VS North Queensland Head to Head

Sportsbet are offering odds of $1.36 for a Roosters win a $3.15 for a Cowboys win. Take the Roosters all day long in this one.

Best Bet

My best bet between the Roosters and Cowboys is the line bet. Sportsbet have -8.5 on the Roosters and are giving out odds of $1.91. This is a safe bet and one that I will be getting on.
