Punters are backing something to beat Black Caviar for the first time this Autumn with Sportingbet Australia reporting a strong push for Star Witness in Saturday’s Newmarket Handicap.
Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said the Blue Diamond winner had been heavily backed this week to cause the upset of the year at Flemington.
“Black Caviar is obviously all the rage with punters as she has been all Autumn and is very firm at $1.30 but this is the first time anything has been really well backed to beat her,” Sullivan said.
“Star Witness has firmed from $17 to $14 with one punter backing her to win $40,000 before Wednesday’s barrier draw which is unlikely to have a huge impact on the market.
“He is a multiple Group 1 winner who is proven down the straight so there is plenty to like about him.”
Sullivan said despite the strong push for Star Witness, Black Caviar would certainly be his worst result come Saturday afternoon.
“Punters have just been filling their boots thanks to Black Caviar and I have no doubt they will try to do so again in the Newmarket,” Sullivan said.
“The way she won the Lightning, it is near impossible to see how she will be beaten but we won’t have any choice in the matter, we will stand her for a fortune again.”
